Bali volcano Mount Agung has erupted with smoke rising 700 metres above the summit of the volcano.

Mount Agung erupted two months after 74,000 Bali residents were evacuated from their homes following a series of dangerous tremors from the volcano.

The alert level remains at a grade three, on a scale of one to four, after it was downgraded from the maximum level in October.

Following a month of close monitoring, officials are closely watching the volcano for signs of increased seismic activity.

National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that people should stay out of the 7.5 kilometres volcano danger zone.

“The status is still the same – level three,” Mr Sutopo said. “Volcanic activities have not shown any increase in earthquakes.”

More than 145,000 people abandoned their homes to seek refuge at the camps when the volcano alert was at its highest, though this number decreased when the warning lowered.

The thick smoke and ash pouring out of the Bali volcano could cause chaos for those hoping to fly in or out of the island.

The aviation colour code from the Agung Volcano Observatory has been updated to orange as a result of the eruption.
