The US President said today that the designation will impose further penalties on the reclusive state.
He branded the move as a long overdue step and part of the US “maximum pressure campaign” against North Korea.
The move returns North Korea to the list of counties the US views as state sponsors of terror for the first time since 2008.
The brutal regime will join Iran, Sudan and Syria on the list of state sponsors of terror.
US officials cited the killing of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s estranged half brother in a Malaysian airport this year as an act of terrorism.
The designation has been debated for months inside the administration, with some officials at the State Department arguing that North Korea did not meet the legal standard to be resisted as a state sponsor of terrorism.
The revelation comes as two kilometres from the North Korea border US troops are preparing for a “chemical war”.
Video captured by Channel 9’s 60 minutes programme shows US troops training within eyeshot as a blatant warning to Kim Jong-un.
