Speaking at a summit of Asian nations in Manila, Mr Duterte said Pyongyang’s missile tests are a concern to every leader in the region and urged people to pray for peace.

It comes after the Philippine president pleaded with Kim Jong-un not to continue launching missiles and conducting nuclear tests as he addressed reporters alongside Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.

He said: “It is not to the interest of North Korea to swagger around and threaten the world, keeping us hostage with the atomic weapons.

“We condemn his several launching of missiles. It is bad, it puts a strain on everybody, not only in Japan but all over the world.

“He should realise that he’d be responsible for ending life on this planet if his mind goes out of control. That’s why we are persuading him, maybe pleading with him to stop the tests.”

The Philippines leader has become known for his no-nonsense attitude and despite previously insulting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, he appears to have begun expressing more caution.

And he warned the “fact that North Korea is toying with bombs, would mean the end of humanity”.

In August he described Kim as a “fool” and a “son of a bitch” as he warned any nuclear blast would destroy the region.
