The 4.7 magnitude quake struck at 11.31am local time between the Salinas Valley and the San Joaquin Valley.

The US Geological Survey calculated the perceived shaking close to the epicentre was strong.

Shaking was reported in the region of Salinas, Monterey and Santa Cruz and all the way north to some parts of the Bay Area, including San Francisco.

The San Andreas Fault forms the main strand of the plate boundary, running from the Gulf of California to north the region of Cape Mendocino.

This comes after a series of quakes to strike the US state.

Fears of a “Big One” is imminent after LA was rocked by a huge 3.2-magnitude quake last week.

Thomas Jordan, director of the Southern California Earthquake Centre, once said: “Anytime there is significant activity in the vicinity of the San Andreas fault.

“We seismologists get nervous.”
