The Popocatepetl – near Mexico City – erupted an astonishing three times in just 24 hours between Thursday and Friday.

Footage of the massive mountain has surfaced online showing it spewing huge plumes of ash into the air.

But according to reports the string of eruptions led to a volcanotectonic earthquake, a quake caused by the movement of magma.

Ash fell over the nearby towns of Tetela del Volcan and Ocuituco, reports El Sol de Cuautla, although there are no reports of casualties from the earthquake.

Locals have been warned to avoid outdoor activities and to keep doors and windows shut, and it is not yet clear when they can leave their homes.

It has been emitting ash since the beginning of the month, reports suggest, before a string of explosions.

Daily Star Online previously reported how the volcano began spewing toxic ash and cloud vapour only hours after a series of massive earthquake rattle Mexico.

Videos appeared online showing plumes of smoke billowing as high as 2km into the sky.

The Mexican city was struck by a fatal quake that left dozens dead in September, although experts said it was not linked to the eruption.
