Today, the island nation announced it would send a huge helicopter carrier – the largest in its fleet – as well as two other ships to join three US Navy vessels close to North Korean waters.
The Japanese ships Ise, Inazuma and Makinami will sail with the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea on Sunday.
It is the first time three US carriers have trained together in a decade.
The show of force comes just days after Trump vowed to back his allies in Asia.
In Seoul a US official said on behalf of the President: “The President doesn’t want war. But he wants to show strength.
“It’s all about projecting power, to send a message to the region that the US backs its allies, and stands up to threats in a way unlike previous administrations.”
The Donald is on a major 12-day tour of the regions and has already stopped in Japan, South Korea and China.
