The siren would warn residents of the islands, which are one of the closest US territories to North Korea, of a potential nuclear strike.
Hawaii already has an Emergency Alert System (EAS) which alerts the public about potential natural disasters such as tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.
But the state’s government is stepping up security measures as tensions increase with Kim Jong-un.
Hawaii Emergency Management Administrator Vern Miyagi said in an online video yesterday: “Starting December 1, a second tool — the attack warning signal will be added.
“The attack warning signal advises everyone to take immediate shelter, get inside, stay inside and stay tuned.”
Hawaii was home to Pearl Harbor, the US naval base whose bombing by the Japanese in 1941 triggered the US joining World War 2.
Miyagi warns that a potential hydrogen or nuclear strike on the island could be apocalyptic, causing 18,000 deaths and between 50 — 120,000 injuries.
When asked about the likely death toll, Miyagi said in a presentation: “We’re talking about maybe 10%.”
