Anthony Weiner will start his 21-month prison sentence on Monday, months after pleading guilty to sending lewd messages to a 15-year-old girl.

Weiner has until 2pm on Monday to surrender at Devens Federal Medical Center in Massachusetts.

He spent his final day of freedom in his Manhattan apartment with his father, Morton, who was spotted at a nearby Starbucks around 11am.

The facility where Weiner is headed is in Ayer, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Boston, and has over 1,000 inmates at the medical center and over 100 more at an adjacent minimum security satellite camp.

FMC Devens has housed a wide variety of inmates – most notoriously Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston marathon bomber, who was placed at Devens for medical treatment in 2013 before being transferred to the supermax facility in Colorado.

The facility, which was once a military facility for nearby Fort Devens, houses inmates of all security levels, but specializes in prisoners with medical conditions and sex offenders.

It boasts tree-lined manicured lawns, dorm-like housing, sports fields and a recreation center.

It also offers a number of leisure activities, including Weiner’s favourite sport – hockey – as well as a hobby craft shop, a music practice room, and cooking classes.
