North Korea has been intensifying its nuclear threats on the United States over the past few months and Trump deployed defences to the region in response.
Former Military advisor Rebeccah Heinrichs warned that the growing tensions between the two states mean that China will need to act as a mediator.
China needs to “tighten the screws” on North Korea and prevent them from waging a war on the West, according to Ms Heinrichs.
Ms Heinrichs said that China has used North Korea as a “wedge” between them and the region but now China will need to stand with Trump despite having strong trading commitments with the hermit nation.
Ms Heinrichs told Fox News: “What Kim Jong-un and the Kim regime want, they want the United States out of the region. That’s what China wants too.
“But the Chinese have 90 per cent of the North Korean trade is with China. So China really is the great enabler of North Korea.
“We need to have China on board to tighten the screws on North Korea and so whatever the President can do to communicate in no uncertain terms that the Chinese have got to get on board with this, that’s what he has to do.
“He has to be very clear, unambiguous because that’s what we need. We need China.
