The quake struck at a depth of 20 miles – 120 miles sout west of Apia, Samoa, 9am today, the US Geological Survey confirmed.

Local reports say it “was one of the longest tremors felt in Samoa for a while”.

The earthquake lasted for around a minute with people running out of their homes and into open spaces.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat from the quake.

People on the islands took to social media to share their experiences of the shake.

One mum tweeted: “Literally grabbed Aniva out of her crib & ran for my life downstairs that earthquake was crazy! Hope y’all ok Samoa! Stay safe.”

Another wrote: “Earthquake here in American Samoa! Damn is it our turn again!”

There are no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake hit in the Pacific Ring of Fire where tectonic plates meet.

Earthquakes and volcanic activity are common in the area.

This comes as back in 2009 a gigantic 8.1 magnitude earthquake triggered devastating tsunamis which killed 189 people on the islands.

One resident wrote on Twitter today: “Every earthquake gets Samoa on edge. The memory of 2009’s Tsunami still haunts us.”
