A Somali security official claimed six missiles struck an ISIS base in Buqa, a remote village in the the nothern state of Puntland.

A US official confirmed to Reuters that Washington had ordered two airstrikes targeting militants in Somalia, thought to be the first such strike against the terror cell in the African country.

The strike comes on the same day President Donald Trump vowed to hit Islamic extremists “ten times harder” following the terror attack in New York this week.

The Somali official told the Associated Press they believed the strike may have been targetting top Daesh leaders, some of whom have fled to Africa after being chased out of Iraq and Syria.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strikes were conducted in northeastern Somalia and an assessment was underway to see how many militants had been hit.

Islamic State has been gathering recruits in the region, although experts say the scale of its force is unclear and it remains a small player compared to al Shabaab.

Qandala Mayor Jama Mohamed said the airstrike had sent terrified villagers fleeing for their lives.

America’s action in Somalia follows Russia’s offensive against ISIS militants in eastern Syria, carrying out more than a dozen bombing raids and nine cruise missile strikes.
