Chinese bombers have been practicing bombing drills near the US territory of Guam in a brazen attempt to assert its authority in the Pacific Ocean.

The drills come as Beijing welcomed a message of congratulation from Kim Jong-un to President after the Communist Party Congress.

The nuke-mad dictator wished Xi “great success” as leader of the nation.

China has spoken of promoting ties with North Korea, despite stated opposition to Kim’s spate of recent missile tests.

H-6K Badger warplanes have flown by the military island before rehearsing attacks with 1,600km range air-launched cruise missiles.

Military tensions are flaring in the Pacific, with the US, Russia, Japan and China all carrying out provocative war exercises in the region.

On Sunday, Russian nuclear bombers heading towards a US aircraft carrier in the Pacific were intercepted by US fighter jets.

The aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, has been deployed to the Sea of Japan amid tensions with North Korea.

US defence chiefs consider North Korea, whose regime has threatened international missile attacks, one of the biggest threats in the region.

But a conflict with the secretive state is viewed as “a fight we can win”, US officials reportedly said.

China, on the other hand, is a “long-term challenge in the region” and US officials “worry about the way things are going”, according to reports.

General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said: “When we look at the capabilities China is developing, we’ve got to make sure we maintain the ability to meet our alliance commitments in the Pacific.”

One US official said “we now have, on a daily basis, armed Chinese Flankers and Japanese aircraft” coming into close proximity.

“It’s very common for [People’s Republic of China] aircraft to intercept US aircraft,” another official said.

“The PRC is practising attacks on Guam.”
