US President Donald Trump has sent two of his newest and deadliest stealth fighters to Japan ahead of his visit to the country later this week.

The two F-35A Lightning II stealth fighters arrived at an air base in Okinawa on Monday ahead of his arrival on November 5.

The pair of £70million ($94million) jets, from Hill Air Force Base, are the first of 12 to land at Kadena Air Base.

These F-35As are the first of their kind to be deployed to the region after being showcased at an airshow in South Korea earlier this month.

In the comings weeks, 10 more F-35A Lightning IIs and 300 airmen will join them amid heightened security concerns in the Pacific.

A US Air Force spokesperson said the jets “demonstrate the continuing U.S. commitment to stability and security in the region”.

F-35A Lightning IIs are said to be the most advanced stealth fighters in the US Air Force.

Military chiefs have hailed the F-35A for its “unprecedented global precision attack capability against current and emerging threats”.

With a top speed of 1,200mph, F-35As are designed to dominate the skies and ground with laser guided missiles.

The first squadron of F-35A fighters was declared combat-ready by the US Air force in August 2016.
