A SAVAGE blast of Arctic conditions bringing months of snowstorms and bone-chillingly low temperatures is coming to Britain this winter.

The UK is forecast to face the most brutal winter in years with heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures across the country.

An icy polar vortex could descend from the Arctic in the coming months and cause temperatures to plummet, forecasters have warned.

A polar vortex is a mass of very cold air which sits above the Earth’s north and south poles.

Freak changes to the jet stream – the air currents that move weather systems around the globe – are allowing the polar vortex to sink over Britain.

As a result, “significant and widespread snow” is expected to fall throughout the country, including parts of London.

Forecasters believe these “harsh” winter conditions will usher in a “new era” that will lead to a “mini ice age” across northern Europe in the coming years.

Last year the Met Office warned a polar vortex could “increase risk of cold snaps” and bring an end to mild winters in the UK.

Although the weather proved less severe, independent forecasters are warning that this could be the harshest winter since 2011.

Britain is currently being battered by 80mph winds and torrential rain caused by Storm Brain.

But in the coming weeks, forecasters expect “a switch to colder conditions” with “two wintry blasts” bringing hell to the UK later this month.
