Putin condemned North Korea’s nuclear tests but insisted the crisis around the Korean peninsula should be resolved through dialogue.

“We condemn the nuclear tests carried out by North Korea,” he told reporters from the Valdai discussion group in Sochi, Russia.

“But it is absolutely necessary to resolve this problem through dialogue and not drive North Korea into a corner, threatening it with the use of force, and not to fall into outright insolence.”

Putin warned of the possibility of conflict and pointed out that North Korea is a “sovereign country.”

The bombastic leader then said Russia was ready to develop new weapons in response to Kim Jong-un’s drive to develop nuclear and missiles systems.

He boasted Russia is on a par with the US at the moment with regards to its missile capabilities.

Putin also accused the US of not fulfilling its obligations under nuclear and chemical weapons treaties.

He said that despite calls to cooperate on global issues, the US had demonstrated a “selfishness” that had seen Russia’s national interests ignored in the nuclear sphere.

Russia will respond immediately and symmetrically if the United States quits the intermediate-range nuclear forces treaty, he added.
