DEFCON has warned that tensions remain “very high” between the US and North Korea amid the war of words between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

The latest alert said: “A review of the data coming out of North Korea indicate a country that feels it is being backed into a corner.

“This significantly raises the possibility of a strike as North Korea may believe it either has nothing to lose or is responding to an impending attack.

“The United States exacerbates the situation with hostile language of its own. At this time, North Korea has declared the right to shoot down US aircraft even outside its airspace.”

The US President has mockingly called Kim Jong-un the “little rocket man” and has vowed to “totally destroy” North Korea if the US and its allies are threatened.

In retaliation, Kim Jong-un escalated the rhetoric even further and called Mr Trump as a “mentally deranged US dotard” and threatened to tame him with “fire”.

But US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has insisted that Mr Trump does not believe diplomatic efforts with North Korea are a waste of time and talks will continue “until the first bomb drops”.

“The president has also made clear to me that he wants this solved diplomatically,” Mr Tillerson said. “He is not seeking to go to war.”

The US is keeping the military option on the table but is also calling on China to step up pressure on North Korea in a bid to end Kim Jong Un’s nuclear weapons programme.

DEFCON said: “The United States is discouraging talks with North Korea, believing such talks are not productive. All backchannel dialog with North Korea has ended.

“Additionally, China has cut a number of communication channels with North Korea over the North’s continued nuclear tests, which also has make communication with North Korea by China more difficult.

North Korea’s nuclear programme appears to be advancing after the nation tested a H-bomb and missiles thought to be capable of reaching the USA.
