La Palma, near the tourist hotspot of Tenerife, has been rocked by dozens of seismic movements of low magnitude between 1.5 and 2.7 on the Richer scale.

The quakes have sparked fears the islands’ huge Cumbre Vieja volcano could blow – and volcano experts have been pulled in to examine the unusual seismic activity.

Scientists have warned if the huge volcano erupts, it will collapse into the sea – sparking a mile-high tidal wave that would engulf Spain, Britain and the east coast of the US.

The biggest earthquake was recorded at 1pm on Saturday, measuring 2.7 magnitude according to data from the National Geographic Institute.

The second largest, of 2.6, took place at around the same time on Sunday, which the third – at 2.1 – rocked the Spanish holiday island at midnight on Monday.

María José Blanco, director of the National Geographic Institute in the Canary Islands, said the island has “never recorded a similar swarm” and although the energy levels are low and very deep, it is different from the seismic activity they have recorded so far.
