Pyongyang has already ratcheted up fears of World War 3 breaking with a series of missile launches and nuclear tests in recent months.

And, with the peninsula marking its 10-day harvest festival Chuseok this week, officials in the South are concerned another blast could be on the way.

North Korea is known to use anniversaries and public holidays to launch missile tests.

A military source told the Yonhap news agency: “Since North Korea can carry out provocations at any time, we are constantly on alert and ready to respond immediately.

“We are closely monitoring any movement in the North’s military, under the assumption that the North can destabilise the conditions on the Korean Peninsula with a major provocation even during Chuseok, which is one of our biggest traditional holidays.”

Some companies in the South have even started handing out survival kits to workers in case of a nuclear blast.

There is particular concern Kim could fire a new weapon on October 10, marking the foundation of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.

The warnings were made as the US said it was looking at trying to open dialogue with North Korea again following a tense few weeks.

Pyongyang has accused US President Donald Trump of declaring war by threatening Kim with destruction.
