Around 160 specially trained soldiers will patrol the border in the south of the country.

Danish soldiers are to have an ancillary role and will not actively IDs of those entering the country at the border.

The soldiers are not being deployed at the ferry ports of Rødby and Gedser, according to the Danish news agency Ritzau.

The plan to put armed military personnel at the border and potential terror targets has been under discussion for well over a year.

It is being implemented as a way to ease the workload of the police, who are said to be overworked and undermanned.

The move has sparked concern with the president of the German region of Schleswig-Holstein, which neighbours Denmark worried about the border soldiers.

In a visit to Copenhagen Daniel Gunther said: “We wish that this is not a permanent state.”

The right-wing populist Danish People’s Party (DF) declared they wanted to secure the 42.5 mile border with Germany.

During a recent visit to Hungary the DF’s Anders Primdahl Vistisen said: “This model could be introduced one-by-one between Denmark and Germany.”

How long military personnel will remain on the streets and at the border remains unclear but troops are expected to be stationned until at least November.
