Yorkshire MEP Jane Collins, who is the lead candidate for UKIP United, said the plan to bring back Farage was a “no brainer” in light of Mrs May’s “Brexit Bretrayal”.

Ms Collins said: “What we saw in Florence yesterday was evidence that Mrs May has just wasted the last fifteen months since the historic vote to regain our independence and she is either unwilling or unable to deliver the will of the British people.

“The fall-out from Florence has been immediate with people seeing the Tories will keep us as members of the EU in all but name until the next General Election when they will then ask voters to reelect them to deliver the next stage of this bogus Brexit.”

She added she was “saddened” Mr Farage had stepped down as leader at a time when negotiations were just beginning.

Ms Collins said: ”The response yesterday speaks for itself: people want Nigel Farage back and despite putting considerable time and effort into my campaign to become the next UKIP leader I think it is in the best interests of the country that Nigel returns – albeit with a new team supporting him.”

Ms Collins added that she “could not see Nigel returning to work with UKIP if Ann Marie Waters is elected leader”.

Ben Walker, Ms Collins’s running mate, backed her calls and said: “As far as political leadership and messaging goes, there’s no one in the country who can touch Nigel for effectiveness.

“But what we need to ensure is that the constant struggles from within UKIP which caused him so many problems and took up so much time are dealt with.

“Thankfully, some of those problems have stepped down but there is still a need for a strong internal structure within UKIP to make sure we can be the guardians of Brexit.”
