Nobuyuki Hirano, chairman of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, said the latest string of missile launches by Pyongyang, including one North Korea claimed was for a hydrogen bomb, gave Japan “a very strong alert”.

Speaking at business conference the Singapore Summit, Mr Hirano, who is also chief executive of parent company Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group said: “We need to worry about this.

“Japanese citizens and public have been accustomed to a long-lasting peace, and they believe peace is always there, but this is not necessarily the case.”

He also claimed North Korea’s actions were “a kind of good lesson”, as now it was time for Japan and United States as well as other countries to come together and say clearly that they would not allow North Korea’s “unlawful conduct”.

The comments come as China and Russia began naval drills near North Korea on Monday amid continuing tensions over the isolated state’s nuclear ambitions.

North Korea launched a missile over Japan last Friday, its second in the past three weeks, and conducted its sixth and by far most powerful nuclear test on September 3, in defiance of international pressure.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in an article published in the New York Times yesterday that the international community must remain united and enforce sanctions against North Korea after its repeated launch of ballistic missiles.
