Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr programme he said he was “very concerned” about the missile threats made by the Korean dictator and said: “This involves us!”

He said: “London is closer to North Korea and its missiles than Los Angeles.”

Asked by broadcaster Marr whether he believed North Korea had a ballistic missile capable of hitting London, Sir Michael replied: “Not yet, but they are clearly accelerating their missile programme and their range is getting longer and longer. We have got to get the programme halted!”

Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un yesterday posed with nuclear scientists and technicians who worked on a hydrogen bomb which the regime claimed to have successfully tested at Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang.

Another photo released by the official Korean Central News Agency yesterday shows a music and theatrical performance dedicated to the regime’s nuclear scientists.

Kim has sparked fury across the world in recent months with repeated missile tests, including a recent one that flew over Japanese territory.

Sir Michael said attempts were being made to find a diplomatic solution to stop the nuclear missile programme – and said the dangers of a “miscalculation” triggering a military response against North Korea were “extremely great”.

He said military conflict should be avoided at all costs, adding: “We’re working flat out at the United Nations to get a better resolution there to enforce the existing sanctions, we’re looking at sanctions across the European Union, and of course we’re trying to persuade China to keep its neighbour in check.”
