Hurricane Irma, the strongest Atlantic Ocean hurricane ever recorded, is set to reach landfall in Florida on Saturday night, according to the latest NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) path updates.

Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a stark warning, having already declared a state of emergency and urged residents on the coast to evacuate the region, told Floridans they need to leave their homes within three hours to ensure their safety.

Mr Scott said: “This is a deadly storm we have never seen anything like this before, it is bigger than our state.

“With a storm surge threat, which will reach 6 to 12 ft of impacts above ground level. This will cover your house – you will not survive all this storm surge.

“This is a life threatening. If you have been ordered, you need to go right now. If you’re in an evacuation zone, leave.

“You need to listen to local evacuation orders. This is going to go faster than you are, these winds are coming.”

The Florida Governor added: “Once the storm starts, law enforcement cannot save you. Do not put your life or family’s life at risk.

“protecting life is our absolute top priority. Our goal is to protect ever person in this state’s life.
