These shocking maps depict the US island city, with a population of about 25,000 people, to be plunged underwater by mostly between one to three feet of water, while some areas are expected to be flooded underwater by three to six feet.

Greg Diamond, a meteorologist, also tweeted potential storm surge flooding in Naples and Marco island, with both areas at risk of being nine feet or more underwater.

Hurricane Irma, a category 3 hurricane as of 11:00am EDT, is forecast to restrengthen while heading for South Florida and the Keys.

Tornados, hail the size of small marbles and gusts of wind up to 70mph are expected to push past Key West and into the tip of Florida, according to National Weather Service (NWS} Key West.

Officials and forecasters have warned of the dangers of “life-threatening” storm surge associated with the storm.

The NWS tweeted in all capital letters: “This is as real as it gets.

“Nowhere in the Florida keys will be safe.”

The powerful storm, which barrelled through a number of Caribbean islands, had left at least 20 people dead as of Friday evening.
