Hurricane Irma has destroyed a number of islands in the region with some desperate civilians scavenging in wrecked shops or even storming private apartments in a hunt for food and water.

Netherlands PM Mark Rutte has deployed troops to the Dutch side of St Martin after witnesses described desperate groups “with machetes” hunting for supplies.

British troops have arrived at the UK territory of Anguilla to deliver six tonnes of aid to the hurricane-hit island.

A British Army Royal Logistics Corps Mexeflote landing raft has been used to move vehicles and an electrical generator from RFA Mounts Bay to Sandy Bay village earlier today.

After delivering equipment to Anguilla the British Navy will move onto the British Virgin Islands, which has also been badly damaged by Hurricane Irma.

Dutch troops have also been sent to their overseas territory on the island of St Martin, which was also badly hit by the Category 5 storm.

One British resident of the Dutch side of the island of St Martin said looting was now taking place and the situation was “very violent and dangerous”.
