THE US and Canada are at risk of a devastating tsunami similar to the wave that hit Japan in 2011 killing more than 15,000 people.

A huge fault line along the seabed near Alaska is putting parts of the US and Canada at risk of tsunami.

Researchers were conducting seismic surveys in an attempt to better understand regional plate tectonics and subduction when they discovered a terrifying feature on the seabed off the coast of Alaska.

The team from Columbia University say it is uncannily similar to the feature that caused the devastating tsunami in Tohoku, Japan in 2011 which took the lives of more than 15,000 people.

That tsunami was triggered by a 9.1 magnitude quake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku, and produced a wave which was 40.5 metres tall.

Japan is still recovering from the natural disaster, and experts around the globe have worked tirelessly in an attempt to try and predict quakes and tsunamis like these for future protection.

Tsunami threats to Alaska had been considered low, but lead author and seismologist Anne Bécel said the discovery “suggests this part of Alaska is particularly prone to tsunami generation”.

She said: “The possibility that such features are widespread is of global significance.”

Ms Bécel added not only is Alaska at risk, but so are more North American coasts, as well as Hawaii and other parts of the Pacific.
