Intimidating tanks and ferocious warships were put on display this week sending chills down the spines of Nato nations and boosting fears President Vladimir Putin could invade Georgia.

Later this month Nato soldiers will descend on Georgia under operation ”Noble Partner” – flexing their own military muscle.

About 2,800 soldiers from eight states will participate, as well as the German military, known as the Bundeswehr.

A spokesman said Germany’s involvement is “to improve the military cooperation between all the partners involved and to further develop the capabilities of the Georgian forces”.

He said: “In addition, Georgia is making a significant contribution to the deployment of the Bundeswehr in Afghanistan.”

The military official also said the move is ”in the context of a long-term partnership and cooperation with the Georgian armed forces”.

These partners include Nato countries Turkey, the USA, Britain and Slovenia, as well as troops from Ukraine and Armenia, and 800 Georgian soldiers.

Unofficially, all eyes are on Russia which will launch its biggest ever Zapad Games in September, on the back of Navy games with China.
