The allegations follow a report in a national newspaper which suggest Mr Tsipras met with Venezuela officials in Moscow in 2013 to discuss possible assistance from the country’s socialist government in the event of leaving the eurozone.

Unnamed former press secretary to the Venezuelan government said he was involved in the talks between the two parties.

The source told: “Alexis Tsipras told us that his party had a plan from the outset to take Greece out of the euro.

“From Venezuela he was asking us to help by giving your country oil.

“He believed that if Greece came out of the euro, it could find support from Venezuela, Russia and China.”

Over the weekend, Greece’s government rejected calls from opposition party New Democracy for a parliamentary committee to investigate the allegations.

Sources close to Mr Tsipras said: “Since the day the government struck a deal on the debt, no week has passed without New Democracy calling for some probe.

“[New Democracy is] left without a political narrative… They are trying in vain.”
