Mission Impossible-style fingerprint scanners have been installed at the offices where eurocrat Michel Barnier and his Brexit team will hold their negotiations to get the best possible deal for the European Union (EU).

Eurocrats of the Taskforce 50, the department in charge of the EU’s Brexit talks, are required to have a badge and to go through a fingerprint scanner to enter the offices on the fifth floor of the European Commission’s Berlaymont HQ in Brussels.

The offices are closely guarded by a private security team under G4S, amid fears Britain may use MI6 and GCHQ to spy on Brussels, according to The Daily Telegraph.

An EU source told the paper: “Everyone is paranoid that the British are spying on us, although no one knows what to do about it if they are but everyone is aware of the risks.”

The EU is particularly suspicious of the “Anglo-Saxon” Five Eyes intelligence sharing community, which the UK is part of, after German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone was tapped by the US.
