The US Air Force B-1 bombers flew near the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as part of the training exercise.

The mission, codenamed “Jungle Lightning”, also saw the bombers launch a precision strike with inert weapons at a firing range with South Korean fighter jets.

Air Force said the bombers flew 2,000 miles from Anderson Air Force Base in Guam to conduct the training exercise.

A spokesperson for Air Force said the 10-hour mission demonstrated “the ironclad U.S. commitment to our allies”.

The drill comes after North Korea stunned the world by successfully firing its first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) believed to be capable of reaching US shores.

General Terrence O’ Shaughnessy, the Pacific Air Forces commander, said: “North Korea’s actions are a threat to our allies, partners and homeland.

“Let me be clear, if called upon we are trained, equipped and ready to unleash the full lethal capability of our allied air forces.”

Since the iCBM launch on July 5 Pyongyang has been boasting of its nuclear capabilities and taunting US President Donald Trump.
