The Prime Minister met the US President on the sidelines of the G20 summit yesterday, with ambitious plans for Britain’s future relationship with the US high on the agenda in a private meeting.
Government sources were optimistic the leaders would make progress on setting a timetable for more open transatlantic business links.
Just 10 minutes into this morning’s meeting, Donald Trump agreed to prioritise work on the trade deal so it can be completed “as soon as possible” after Brexit, a UK government official said.
And Mr Trump also made it clear he believes Britain will “thrive” once it has left the bloc.
The 50 minute discussion went on an extra 20 minutes than scheduled, and the two leaders were seen continuing to chat as they walked to another meeting at the Hamburg summit.
A senior Downing street official described the meeting as having “very good atmosphere”, and revealed a “significant proportion” was dedicated to the trading relationship – with the discussion being entirely “positive”.
The source told the Guardian: “They agreed to prioritise work so a deal will be ready as soon as possible after Britain leaves the EU.
