Thousands of protestors are set to march in Hamburg this weekend as Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and other world leaders attend the G20 summit in Hamburg.
German police last night used water cannons to break up large crowds of protestors.
Hamburg’s police chief has warned that “acts of violence” could take place over the weekend.

2.18pm: Thousands of G20 protestors in Hamburg have triggered a massive counter-demonstration operation from Hamburg police.

Timo Zill, spokesman for the city’s police force, assured that the police will appropriately deal with acts of violence.

“Militant protesters who exercise violence are not protected by Article 8,” he said. “We will act systematically.”

The police now has the arduous task of protecting 35 high-profile delegations as well the 6,500 summit participants.

Mr Zill added: “Violent demonstrations are, for example, demonstrators who disguise themselves, throw stones, meaning very violent acts are being committed.

“And then we also have an obligation towards uninvolved people, peaceful demonstrators, of course.

“We are in a metropolis. Daily life is particular should go on. We are also prepared for that. That is why we also say: we will very decidedly react and proceed against criminals.”

12.00pm: Greenpeace activists projected the slogan “No Trump, Yes Paris” onto a building in central Warsaw earlier today in protest at the US withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement.

The action coincided with Mr Trump’s arrival in Warsaw and Greenpeace said it did not include a gathering of protesters.

10.44am: Tens of thousands of protestors are expected to gather in the Hamburg borough of St Pauli at 3pm BST, around the same time that Donald Trump is due to land in Hamburg.

The demonstrators will then march north to the heavily secured G20 summit venue.

Turkish-German protester Fatima Cicek attended a demonstration yesterday, and explained that she wanted to make the point that the G20 is undemocratic as it is a forum where a handful of leaders make decisions that could impact the whole world.

But her main issue is with Mr Trump’s presence.

“He is the most disruptive and egotistic leader at the summit,” Cicek said.
