The United States president tweeted at 3pm BST: “If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the UK and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.”

Ten-month-old Charlie has been receiving specialist treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital since he was born in October 2016 with a rare condition called mitochondrial depletion syndrome.

His parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, have been fighting to keep him on life-support but lost their final appeal with the European Court of Human Rights last week to take him to the US for experimental treatment.

They had crowdfunded £1.3million to pay for the treatment.

Mr Trump’s tweet garnered 7,400 ‘likes’ and 2,300 retweets in the 50 minutes after he tweeted.

Charlie’s life-support was due to be turned off last Friday but the hospital has said it will continue Charlie’s care to allow his family to spend more time with him.
