A local community leader, working to locate victims, has claimed “nobody who lived on the top three floors survived” the fire which has destroyed Grenfell Tower on the Lancaster West Estate in North Kensington after starting just before 1am.

He said: “We have a list of missing people – there are so many. It’s possible there are more than 50, possibly hundreds.”

Six fatalities have been confirmed, but the number is set to increase, and more than 74 people have been taken to hospital, London Fire Commissioner, Dany Cotton confirmed.

Forty fire engines with more than 200 firefighters rushed to tackle the enormous fire.

More than 100 medics are attending to those affected by the horror incident.

London Ambulance Services said 20 people are in a critical condition, 64 were taken to six different hospitals and ten more took themselves to hospital.

At Queen Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, three out of 16 patients are in a critical condition.

Some people are still trapped inside the building, near Westfield shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush, and were heard screaming to be rescued as flames raced up the building from the second floor where it started.

Between 400 and 600 people live in the building, local councillor Judith Blakeman who lives across the road, said.

Desperate families were seen trying to escape by building ropes from sheets in an attempt to reach the ground.

Police with battering rams are working in unison with fire crews to try free those who are trapped in the 120-flat tower where hundreds of people were sleeping.
