An imprisoned American student was in a coma for a year in North Korea before he was released by Kim Jong-Un’s regime today.
Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old University of Virginia student, was med-evacuated from the communist nation and is due to arrive back home in Cincinnati on Tuesday evening.
But as he flies home it was revealed that he fell into a coma a year ago, shortly after his last tearful appearance at a show trial in Pyongyang.
North Korea claims Warmbier contracted botulism and was given a sleeping pill form which he never woke up.
The surprise announcement of Warmbier’s release coincided with the visit of former NBA player Dennis Rodman – a longtime friend of the North Korean regime.
A US official has insisted that the State Department secured the jailed student’s release and Rodman’s trip was a ‘bizarre coincidence’.
Warmbier was arrested on New Year’s Eve in Pyongyang for allegedly stealing a hotel poster and paraded for the cameras during his March 2016 show trial.
He had been sentenced to 15-years in a North Korean prison with hard labor.
While it is not clear how the young student fell into a coma, North Korean officials have claimed that shortly after his tearful last public appearance he contracted botulism.
They claim he was then administered a ‘sleeping pill’ and never woke up.
