The US President referred to the attacks as “evil slaughter” and said: “This bloodshed must end, this bloodshed will end.”

Mr Trump made the remarks after a gala event in Washington DC.

He said: “We renew our resolve, stronger than ever before, to protect the United States and its allies from a vile enemy that has waged war on innocent life.

“And it has gone on too long. This bloodshed must end. This bloodshed will end. As president I will do what is necessary is to prevent this threat from spreading to our shores.”

Seven people were killed and at least 48 injured after a van drove into pedestrians on London Bridge, where the attackers started randomly stabbing passers-by in Borough Market just after 10pm on Saturday.

The US Defence Secretary, Jim Mattis, did not mention the deadly London attack but said that the US and its allies would not be intimidated by ISIS violence.

Speaking at the opening of US-Australia talks in Sydney, he said: “We don’t scare.”

Mr Trump did not make any further comments about Sadiq Khan, the London Mayor.

The President lashed out at Mr Khan earlier on Sunday, saying that it was time to “stop being politically correct” about terrorism.
