His death, at the age of 89, was confirmed by his daughter.
Mika Brezinski, co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, wrote on Instagram: “He was known to his friends as Zbig, to his grandchildren as Chief and to his wife as the enduring love of her life.”
She added: “I just knew his as the most inspiring, loving and devoted father any girl could ever have.”
Mr Brzezinski served as national security adviser to President Carter in the years of the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the late 1970s.
He also supported the plan to donate billions of dollars in military aid to Islamic militants fighting invading Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
Born in Warsaw on March 28, 1928, Mr Brzezinski warned against the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
His bond with Jimmy Carter developed as a result of his membership of the Trilateral Commission.
The Trilateral Commission was the group David Rockefeller set up in 1973 for political and business leaders from North America, Western Europe and Japan to consider challenges facing industrialised countries.
Mr Brzezinski was the group’s first director and, in 1974, invited Mr Carter, who then was the governor of Georgia, to become a member.
Two years later, Mr Carter was the Democratic presidential nominee and he hired Mr Brzezinski as a foreign affairs adviser.
