The US President has been under fire after his sacking of FBI chief James Comey, who was leading an investigation into the Republican Firebrand’s election campaign.
Now with a potential criminal investigation into White House staffers underway, former FBI special agent Asha Rangappa has claimed the President’s actions could have parallels with Richard Nixon, who resigned amid growing calls for his impeachment.
Speaking on BBC’s Newsnight, Ms Rangappa said: “If there is evidence mounting that there might have been efforts to obstruct justice that would be a parallel back to Nixon and that would not look good for the President.
“The other thing that I would look for are whether the special counsel is going to bring charges.
“We do know that there are ongoing criminal investigations coming out of this counter-intelligence investigation that’s also going on.
“That’s kind of not typical, usually you don’t see a lot of prosecutions coming out of a counter-intelligence investigation,
“So depending on where those go and who is implicated, that might spell trouble”
