he President-elect made his first phone call to Angela Merkel following his election victory in an attempt to build a new Franco-German relationship.

Bruno Bernard, a party member for centre-right Les Republicains suggested that the centrist would not be strong enough to stand up to Mrs Merkel.

Speaking on Sky News when the advisor to local government was asked whether this could be another President who does what Mrs Merkel asks him to, he replied: “sounds about right”.

He said: “That is what all French presidents have done. That’s what they did. They didn’t really have a choice.

“It’s because France is not strong enough to impose itself on the European stage.

“Macron will have to reform the country before he can hope to influence Merkel and the European Union as a whole.”

Mr Bernard claimed that the French people are not happy with their position on the global scale.

He added: “That is not something the French like to hear.

“They see [their] relationship with Germany as very special, but unfortunately they are the only one.
