America has permanently stationed a fleet of missable-capable drones in South Korea amid the rising tensions with Jong-un.
The Grey Eagle drones, designed to carry Hellfire missiles, were deployed 180km from Seoul as America steps up its preparations in the face of North Korea’s nuke threats.
America’s drone programs is just one of the deadly weapons President Trump would turn to in the face on conflict.
They’ve been increasingly used as the weapon of choice in the war on terror in Afghanistan and the middle east for their ability to drop bombs with precision.
Under Obama’s White House, up to 4,666 people — including 745 civilians — were killed by drone strikes, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
Critics had even bigger concerns about the drone programme being handed over to Trump, with effectively no rules left in place by Obama.
Since being inaugurated Trump rolled back what little restrictions were in place, giving the CIA new authority to launch a drone strike.
The first strikes under Trump’s government were carried out without his sign off just four days after he was inaugurated.
The Pentagon and CIA now have full autonomy to launch a strike against terrorist targets without White House approval.
And Trump removed the rule stopping a drone strike outside of a war zone unless there was a “near certainty” of avoiding civilian deaths.
Now with America’s attack drones stationed less than 200km from North Korea, experts say they could make the dangerous stand-off even worse.
State department spokesman Mark Toner said: “In addition to Thaad these [drones] are defensive measures that are a response to what we – and by ‘we’ I mean South Korea, the United States and Japan – view as a real and credible threat to our security.”
North Korean nuclear weapons expert Jeffrey Lewis said Trump must make it clear that the drones won’t be armed — or risk retaliation from the tubby tyrant.
