The MEP insisted Mr Macron was an “establishment” man as the pro-European centrist is expected to become the next French President ahead off the May 7 vote.

Speaking to Tip TV Politics Mr Woolfe blasted the EU as he praised Marine Le Pen for her success in getting to the second round of voting in the French election.

He said: “Marine Le Pen has shown herself to be a formidable, intelligent politician. Not only in terms of her strategy, her strategy is the long lasting message that comes from this I think.

“This is about saying, ‘we are no longer a nation of left and right’. You can see that from the fact the political parties are in.

“This is about those who the elitists, the Europeanists who support a major project and people who are being left behind and ignored. There is no doubt about it, Macron is an establishment man.”

The MEP claimed the pro-European candidate had been “picked” to run against Mrs Le Pen.

President François Hollande and defeated candidates François Fillon and Benoît Hamon are among those backing Mr Macron.

Mr Woolfe added: “[Macron] has been clearly picked out follow along this kind of tried and tested route, that started with Tony Blair.

“You choose a good looking, reasonable intelligent man. They put the same guy in Italy, only to be voted out recently by the Italians.
