The group were killed after a failed drive-by targeting police officers.

The incident took place at around 5pm local time (11am GMT) in East Java.

Police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera said officers had been monitoring a vehicle which had links to extremists in the area.

He said: “We tried to stop that vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop.”

Mr Mangera said those in the vehicle then “took out weapons and shot at officers”.

The men then fled into a plantation before a shoot-out ensued.

The spokesman said: “By around 5pm we had immobilised all of them.”

Police had been monitoring the vehicle in connection after three suspected members of Islamic extremist group Jemaah Anshorut Daulah were arrested yesterday.

Indonesia has been on high alert over a recent resurgence in radicalism inspired by the extremist group Islamic State.

Four people were killed by ISIS fighters during an attack in Jakarta last year.
