French interior minister Matthias Fekl said the country will bolster its security measures following the Russia attack in which a suicide bomber blew himself up, killing 14 and wounding 50.

The suicide bomber has since been identified as Akbarjon Djalilov, a 22-year-old Russian citizen born in Kyrgyzstan with ties to radical Islamists.

A spokesperson for the interior ministry said: “Following the events in the St Petersburg metro, and as a precautionary measure, interior minister Matthias Fekl has decided to redeploy security means in public transport across the Paris region.

“France is facing an extremely high threat from terrorism, and the government will continue to take precautionary measures to protect the French people. We must remain extremely vigilant.”

The interior ministry added that troops had been “mobilised” and that the number of police officers, gendarmes and soldiers patrolling Paris trains, metros and buses had been increased in a bid to “dissuade” potential attackers.

The French government imposed a nationwide state of emergency in November 2015, right after an Islamic State-led commando killed 130 people in central Paris.
