Mrs Le Pen is seen well ahead of her rivals in the first round of the election, which will be held on April 23, and is expected to garner 27 per cent of the vote, according to the survey carried out for Les Echos and Radio Classique and published yesterday.

Mr Macron, the head of the political movement En Marche! (On the Move) is hot on Mrs Le Pen’s heels and poised to garner 25 per cent of the vote.

Centre-right Les Republicains candidate François Fillon – whose campaign has been rattled by a seemingly unending string of legal woes – is set to come in third place with 19 per cent of the vote.

Socialist candidate Benoît Hamon, is is tipped to pick up 13 per cent of the vote; his closest left-wing rival, firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon, would garner 12 per cent of the vote.

Mr Macron, who, at 39, is a relative newcomer to politics, is seen beating the far-right chief in the May run-off by 60 per cent versus 40 per cent.
