The First Minister will ask the Scottish Parliament for permission to request a Section 30 order from Westminster – which is required to allow a referendum to be held.
Nicola Sturgeon stressed Scotland will make its own decision about its future as she announced plans to hold a referendum between Autumn 2018 and Spring 2019.
She said: “If I ruled out a referendum I would be forcing Scotland to follow UK into a hard Brexit.”
Ms Sturgeon said she will give Scots a “real choice” between Brexit and leaving the UK in a second vote on independence.
Attempting to defend her plans, Ms Sturgeon said: “Our plan to protect Scotland’s interests. Right now Scotland stands at a hugely important crossroads. We did not choose to be in this position and I wish that we were not in this position but we are and the stakes are high. We must have a plan for the way forward.”
