Mr Khan, says he is disgusted at the American president’s so called “Muslim ban” which stopped immigration from seven Muslim countries.

His comments come as MPs are set to debate two petitions in parliament at 4.30pm today – one for, and another against, Mr Trump’s visit.

But Downing Street has already confirmed that the American president’s visit is set to go ahead in June.

Mr Khan, a Muslim, said: “I love America, I love Americans and I believe the special relationship is a good one and one that’s here to stay.

“But when you’re mates with somebody, when you’ve got a special relationship, of course you are side-by-side with them in times of adversity but when they are wrong you call them out.”

MPs will consider Theresa May’s decision to extend an invitation to Mr Trump in a debate being held in response to the petitions signed by millions of Britons.
