A survey conducted by research institute Emnid on behalf of Focus magazine found the majority of Germans now agreed that Afghans who had failed in their application to stay in the country sould be removed.
The same amount also agreed with the view that migrants with criminal records should be deported.
Over two days last week, pollsters surveyed 1,004 people on the issue of deportation back to Afghanistan, which has been the subject of several protests from pro-migrant activists.
The biggest support for deportation came from people who identified as supporters of the anti-immigration party Alternative for Deutschland (AfD).
