A MAYOR in a small town in Hungary has enacted a series of extremely hardline by-laws which target “Muslim culture” and public displays of affection by homosexuals.

The mayor of Ásotthalom has enacted the by-laws in the small town, just miles from the border with Serbia, where a border fence has been constructed in response to the refugee crisis.

The laws prohibit Muslim clothing, the call to prayer and public displays of affection by homosexuals.

Signs in the village in English and Hungarian say Ásotthalom defends its traditions.

Laszlo Toroczka told a BBC investigation he would welcome new arrivals from western Europe – but he is strongly opposed to migrants from Islamic countries.

“We are a white, European, Christian population and we want to stay [like] this,” he told the BBC.

“It’s very important for the village to preserve its traditions. If large numbers of Muslims arrived here, they would not be able to integrate into the Christian community.

“We can see large Muslim communities in western Europe that haven’t been able to integrate – and we don’t want to have the same experience here.

“I’d like Europe to belong to Europeans, Asia to belong to Asians and Africa to belong to Africans. Simple as that.”

He claims that “real” refugees are those living in “multicultural Western Europe”.

His hardline approach has been supported by Christian fundamentalist groups – linked to former British National Party leader Nick Griffin.
