A series of Arctic winds are set to come down next week, freezing the US
Northern and central plains and the Midwest will drop by 5-20 degrees
The Deep South could follow suit, but may be spared the worst of the freezing
Christmas may be warmer, however, thanks to Pacific winds and the jet stream
The northwest is also currently experiencing freezing rains and snow

Winter already has America in its grasp, but things will soon get even chillier as a series of cold waves wash over the central and eastern US in the next week, dragging temperatures below zero.

Residents from the northern and central plains to the Midwest – some of whom have already endured heavy snowfall – can expect temperatures to be 5-20 degrees lower than this week, thanks to a major push of Arctic air.

‘The air mass on the way for the middle of December is likely to be substantially colder, when compared to that of this past week and this weekend,’ AccuWeather lead long-range meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.
