Donald Trump has officially selected the man he wants to take on the toughest job in international diplomacy.

The president-elect’s team announced Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has been tapped to serve as U.S. ambassador to China, a spokesperson told ABC News.

Branstad, who has been governor since 2011, described Chinese President Xi Jinping a ‘long-time friend’ when he visited Iowa in 2012.

In 1985, Xi, then aged 32, lived briefly in the small town of Muscatine, Iowa, while studying agriculture and he is understood to have met Branstad during that visit, forming a friendship that has lasted decades.
